The Court cards

General characteristic of the four dignitaries

The Kinghts
are the most sublime, orginal, active part of the Energy of the Element. Their action is swift and violent, but transient. In the Element of Fire, for instance, the Knight corresponds to the Lightining flash; in the Element of Water, to Rain and Springs; in that of Air, to Wind; in that of Earth, to Mountains.

The Queens are the complements of the Knights. They receive, ferment, and transmit the orginal Energy of their Knight. Quick to receive that Energy, they are also fitted to endure for the period of their function; but they are not ahe product. They represent the seceond stege in the process wheose fourth and last state is material realization.

The Prince is the Son of the Queen(the old King's daughter) by the Knight who has won her; he is therefore represented as in a chariot, going forth to carry out the combined Energy of his parents. He is the active issue of their union, and its manifestation. His action is consequently more enduring than that of his forbears.

The Princess represent the ultimate issue of the orginal energy in its completion, its crystallization, its materalization. They also represent the counterbalancing, the reabsorpion of Energy.

THE ORIGIN OF THE TAROT

The origin of this pack of cards is very obscure. Some authorities seek to put it back as far as the ancient Egyptian Mysteries; others try to bring it forward as late as the fifteenth or even the sixteenth century. But the Tarot certainly existed, in what may be called the classical form, as early as the fourteenth century; for packs of that date are extant, and the form has not varied in any notable respect since that time.

THE THEORY OF THE CORRESPONDENCES OF THE TAROT

Unimportant to the present purpose are tradition and authority. Einstein’s Theory of Relativity does not rest on the fact that, when his theory was put to the test, it was confirmed. The only theory of ultimate interest about the Tarot is that it is an admirable symbolic picture of the Universe, based on the data of the Qabalah.
